The ice cream shell in varying forms is found from KwaZulu Natal to Saldanha Bay. The local one occurs frequently on our beaches, and when it emerges, has a purple grey, to pink tinge which quickly is bleaches to white by the sun.
Hermit crabs love to inhabit them, and one often sees them moving in shallow pools with a crab inside.
These shells are interesting because they have great length in proportion to their width and they have a large number of whorls which gives them an interesting geometry and makes them a good candidate to cast in sterling silver. They make great pendants because of their shape.
Enjoy😊
